Scammers are now pretending to be employees of the National Broadband Network in an effort to con victims out of money and personal information.

SCAMMERS are now pretending to be employees of the National Broadband Network in an effort to con victims out of money and personal information, the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission has confirmed.

Australians over 65 are particularly at risk, as fraudsters use phone calls to target their victims, signing them up to fake accounts, gaining remote access to computers, and stealing personal information such as identity, addresses and Medicare and licence numbers.

ACCC deputy chair Delia Rickard said scammers were increasingly using government brands to trick people.

She said if a stranger asked to pay for a service using an iTunes gift card, it was a scam. ‘‘Their goal is always to either get hold of your money or personal information,’’ Ms Rickard said.
